King House Boyle

Is a magnificently restored Georgian mansion located in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Built in 1730 as the seat of the King family, a powerful landowning dynasty, the house later became a military barracks and recruiting depot for the famous Irish regiment of the British army, the Connaught Rangers.

The house is now open to the public as a museum bringing its history to life. Home to the Connaught Rangers museum as well as the Boyle Civic Art Collection, the house also plays host to musical, dramatic and cultural events and is a central locale for the ever-popular Boyle Arts Festival.

Strokestown Park House

Strokestown, Co Roscommon is set on about 300 acres, it is open to the public, as is the Famine Museum on the grounds. Today Stokestown estate is synonymous with the Great Famine and includes the National Irish Famine Museum. Strokestown park contains some of the best records from the time of the Famine. The museum was built by the Westward Group and all the documents on display in the museum are from the estate.

This Energy Centre provides visitors with a unique insight into what coal mining life was like in the Arigna Valley, since its beginning in the 1700’s until closure in 1990. During the underground tour, visitors will experience what it was like to work in some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world. The tour which will last 45 minutes brings visitors to the coal face of the mine, where the methods used to extract coal are demonstrated. Lighting and sound effects in the mine, add to the authenticity of the underground experience.

Museum of Country Life

Turlough Park, A visit to National Museum of Ireland – Country Life is a great day out for the whole family, with plenty to see and do for everyone. Home to the national collection of objects representing the traditional way of life in Ireland since 1850, the National Museum of Country Life is set in modern exhibition galleries in the spectacular grounds of Turlough Park House and surrounded by magnificent gardens and lake. As well as the Museum Galleries and the 19th century Victorian Gothic house, the extensive grounds of Turlough Park feature gardens, woodland walks, a river and lake all overlooked by an ancient round tower. Croagh Patrick is situated near the town of Westport in County Mayo, Croagh Patrick rises to a height of 762m above sea level and normally takes about two hours for the average person to reach the summit, and one and a half hours to descend. It is advisable to take sturdy footwear, rainwear and some drinking water. Climbing sticks are for sale at the Centre.
